Location Mount Yae 八重岳 (Mount Yaedake, Yae-Take) is the highest elevation on the Motobu Peninsula in the northern Yanbaru Region of Okinawa in Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan. During the Battle of Okinawa, known to the Americans as the Yae-Take hill mass. Wartime History By April 1945, Yae-Take was defended by the Udo Force (Kunigami Detachment) under the command of Colonel Takehiko Udo comprised of the 2nd Infantry Unit of the 44th Independent Mixed Brigade reinforced by absorbing sea-raiding suicide squadrons and remnants that opposed the initial landing. On April 1, 1945 after the U.S. landing on Okinawa, the Motobu Peninsula was part of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), III Amphib Corps area. After two weeks, the 6th Marine Division (6th MARDIV) reached Yae-Take. On April 14, 1945 the 6th Mar Div aided by aircraft, ground fire, and naval vessels, opens 2-pronged assault against Yae-Take hill mass in bitter and costly fighting. The Japanese defend with heavy and effective fire from dominating terrain. The assault is conducted by the 4th Marine Regiment attacking in an easterly direction. The 29th Marine Regiment attacks west and southwest. On April 17, 1945 the Marines capture the summit of the Yae-Take hill mass ending the battle.
