Location Lat 26° 13' 0N Long 127° 40' 60E Naha is located in the southwestern corner of Okinawa Island in Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Naha is the largest city on the island. Also known as Nahashi,Nawa,Naha-shi or Nafa. Japanese Naval Underground Headquarters 236 Aza Tomishiro, Tomishiro-son During the Battle of Okinawa, the Imperial Japanese Navy Headquarters (IJN HQ) was located atop a hill at this location. During the Battle of Okinawa, this hilltop was the Imperial Japanese Navy Headquarters. A self-guided tour of the renovated tunnel ruins includes the cipher, hospital and officer's rooms, including where officers including Vice-Admiral Minoru Ota committed suicide. In the entrance lobby are photos and relics, and outside panoramic views of southern Okinawa. Atop the hill is a monument to Vice-Admiral Ota. Naha Airfield (Oroku Airfield) Built by the Japanese and captured by the Americans still in use today as Naha Airport Invasion Beach On April 1, 1945 U.S. forces landed on a seven mile strech of beach located ten miles north of Naha. By the end of the day, 60,000 troops landed and met little resistance suffering only 28 casualties mostly due to friendly fire. Today the invasion beach spans from Bolo Point, past Torii Station First Special Forces Camp and Kadena Air Base to Camp Foster to the west of Highway 58.
