    Tokashiki Island Kerama Island Group | Okinawa Prefecture Japan
Location
Tokashiki Island is located in the Kerama Island Group in Japan. Located fifteen miles west of Okinawa. Includes the town of Tokashiki. Borders the Kerama Anchorage and Zamami Island to the west.

Wartime History
On March 27, 1945 at 9:11am the U.S. Army 77th Infantry Division, 306th Infantry Regiment that landed at two locations on the western coast of Tokashiki Island and advanced across the island and by evening dug in a mile from the northern tip of the island. During the night, the Americans heard explosions and screams of pain in the distance. On March 28, 1945 they advanced into a small valley and found it littered with more than 150 dead and dying Japanese including many civilians. Immediately, the soldiers and medics did what they could for those still alive. Aside from this mass suicide incident, the Americans captured captured a total of 1,195 civilians and 121 military prisoners on the island.
