| Location The Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Island Group) 八重山諸島 are located in the Sakishima Islands of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Also known as Yaeyama-rettō. Surrounded by the East China Sea. To the northeast is the Miyako Islands and further to the northeast is Okinawa Island. Yaeyama Islands include: Ishigaki Island (Ishigaki-jima), Aragusuku Island (Aragusuku-jima), Hateruma Island (Hateruma-jima), Iriomote Island (Iriomote-jima), Kayama Island (Kayama-jima), Kohama Island (Kohama-jima), Kuroshima Island (Kuroshima), Sotobanari Island (Sotobanari-jima), Taketomi Island (Taketomi-jima), Yubu Island (Yubu-jima), Hatoma Island (Hatoma-jima), Yonaguni Island (Yonaguni-jima) and Obama Island (Obama-jima). Wartime History During World War II, many residents of Ishigaki Island were forcibly made to take refuge on Iriomote Island.
