Location
The East China Sea is considered a is a marginal sea in the western Pacific Ocean located off the eastern coast of China that encompasses roughly 1.249 million square miles. To the north connects to the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula ending at an imaginary line from Qidong at the mouth of the Yangtze River extending eastwards to Jeju Island off the Korean Peninsula. To the east borders Kyushu and the Ryukyu Islands. To the south borders Taiwan (Formosa). Connects via the Korean Strait with the Sea of Japan and via the Taiwan Strait (Formosa Strait) to the South China Sea and connects via Tokara Strait and Miyako Strait in the Ryukyu Islands to the Philippine Sea.
Wartime History
During the Pacific War, the East China Sea was used by Japanese and Allied warships and vessels. By early 1945, Allied aircraft began patrolling the area until the end of the Pacific War.
