Location
Jeju Island is located in the Korean Strait. To the north is the southwest corner of the Korean Peninsula. To the south is the East China Sea. In Korean known as Jejudo or Jeju-do. Nicknamed Sammudo (Island of Three Lacks) or Samdado (Island of Three Abundances). In Hangul 제주도. Known as Quelpart, named for the first Dutch ship, quelpaert de Brack the first European ship that discovered the island in 1642. Also known in Portuguese as Ilha de Ladrones (Island of Thieves). Between 1910–1945 during the Japanese colonial era known as Saishū Jima. Today part of Jeju Province in the Republic of Korea (South Korea).
