Location
The South China Sea is considered a is a marginal sea and is part of the western Pacific Ocean and encompasses roughly 1.4 million square miles. Also known as the West Philippine Sea. The South China Sea spans from Karimata Strait, Strait of Malacca (Malacca Strait) and Strait of Taiwan. Borders China to the north, Taiwan (Formosa) to the northeast, Vietnam (French Indochina) and Cambodia to the west, Philippine Sea to the east, Philippines to the southeast, Malaysia to the west and Borneo to the south. Includes the Spratly Islands.
Wartime History
During the Pacific War, the South China Sea was used by Japanese and Allied warships and vessels. By late 1943, Allied aircraft began patrolling the area until the end of the Pacific War.
