Location Lat 8°46′49″N 167°44′14″E Ebeye Island is located at the eastern edge of Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. To the south is Kwajalein Island. Also known as Epjā or Ebeje or Ibae the Marshallese language. During 1885, the German Empire annexed the Marshall Islands. In late 1914 became a mandate of Japan as part of the South Seas Government (Nan'yō-chō). The Japanese referred to the location as Ebize, their pronunciation of the name in the Marshallese language. Postwar, became part of a United Nations (U.N.) protectorate administered by the United States. On May 1, 1979 officially recognized as the the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Today, Ebeye Island has the largest population of any island in the atoll. Wartime History In the early 1940s, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) began building a seaplane base on Ebeye Island. During the Pacific War, used by the Japanese Navy as a seaplane mooring area for Ebeye Seaplane Base. On January 31, 1944 occupied by the U.S. forces and afterwards, U.S. Navy 107th Naval Construction Battalion (107th NCB) "Seebees". Today Overpopulated, it is the only place to stay for any non-military personnel to stay who are interested in diving the Kwajalein area.
