Location Batan Island is located in the Batanes Island Group (Batanes Islands) in Batanes Province in the Philippines. At the northeast of the island is Mount Iraya (Mt. Iraya) with an elevation of 3,307'. To the south is approximately 120 miles away is the northern coast of Luzon. To the north is Taiwan (Formosa). Wartime History On December 8, 1941 a Japanese Special Task Force from Formosa lands on Batan Island without opposition aas one of the first locations in the Philippines occupied by Japanese forces. Batan Island was occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the Pacific War. Basco Lat 20° 26' 60N Long 121° 58' 0E Basco is located on the northern portion of Batan Island.
