Location Lat 20° 26' 60N Long 121° 58' 0E Basco is located on the northern portion of Batan Island in the Batanes Island Group (Batanes Islands) in Batanes Province in the Philippines. To the northeast is Mount Iraya (Mt. Iraya) with an elevation of 3,307'. Wartime History On December 8, 1941 a Japanese Special Task Force from Formosa landed on Batan Island and was one of the first locations in the Philippines occupied by the Japanese. Basco was occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the Pacific War. Starting in late February 1945 attacked by American aircraft until early July 1945. American missions against Basco February 21, 1945–July 4, 1945 Japanese Tunnels The Basco area and Batan Island has Japanese tunnels dug during the Pacific War are scattered throughout the island around Basco and in the Naidi Hills. Beside the gravel road going to the barrio of San Joaquin on Batan's east coast, there are a couple of tunnels partially hidden from view by overgrowth. One is passable, but only for a few meters.
