    Mactan Island Cebu Province Philippines
Location
Mactan Island is located in Cebu Province in the Central Visayas (Region VII) in the Visayas (Visayas Islands) in the central Philippines. Two miles to the west is Cebu City on Cebu Island. Borders the Mactan Channel and Cebu Harbor to the west and Bohol Strait (Cebu Strait) to the east. To the northeast is Magelian Bay. To the southwest is the Mactan Reef. To the southeast is Hilutangan Channel and beyond to Olango Island.

Prewar
In the 1500's Mactan Island was part of the Kingdom of Mactan led by Lapu-Lapu. With the arrival of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived and began converting people in Cebu including Rajah Humabon. On April 27, 1521 Magellan sailed from Cebu with a small force to Mactan Island and waded ashore to convert the islanders but instead were met by roughly 1,500 locals that charged them during the Battle of Mactan and during the combat Magellan was wounded by a spear and killed and his body was captured and kept as a war trophy by the warriors.

Wartime History
On March 28, 1945 liberated by U.S. Army 23rd Infantry Division (23rd ID) "Americal Division", 132nd Infantry Regiment (132nd IR), Company E without opposition and secures Opon Airfield.

Used by the Japanese Navy, still in use today
