    Sampaloc District (Sampalog) Manila | National Capital Region | Luzon Philippines
Location
Lat 14° 37' 0N Long 121° 0' 0E  Sampaloc District is located in the northeastern Manila in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Luzon in the Philippines. Also known as simply Sampalog. Also spelled Sampalog.

Wartime History
During early 1942 occupied by the Japanese until early February 1945. On February 4, 1945 retreating Japanese forces burned this area of the city.

Santo Thomas University (University of Santo Tomas, UST)
Located in the Sampaloc District of Manila. Established on April 28, 1611 it became a university in 1645 and the second university in the Philippines, and the oldest university in Asia, predated Harvard by 25 years. The university was relocated to the north of Manila afterwards and expanded into a larger campus.  During the war, it was used as a POW Camp for over 3,000 civilians.  Liberated by the U.S. Army in early February 1945.
