| Location Lat 14° 17' 8N Long 120° 43' 8E Ternate is located at an elevation of 26' / 7m above sea level near the southern coast of Manila Bay to the southwest of Cavite in Cavite Province on Luzon in the Philippines. Wartime History In early February 1942 the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) emplaced ten 240mm Howitzers from the Hayakawa Detachment under the command of Col. Masayoshi Hayakawa. On February 6, 1942 the artillery began daily bombardment of the fortified islands in Manila Ba. On March 15, 1942 the Japanese resume daily bombardment and receive counterbattery fire until March 21, 1942. Ternate was used as a staging area for the Japanese Army for the landing on Corregidor on May 5, 1942. Starting in the middle of February 1945 targeted by American warships and airvraft. In early March 1945 liberated by elements of the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division.
