Location Lat 3° 22' 60S Long 153° 18' 0E Boang Island in the Tanga Island Group (Tanga Islands) to the north of New Ireland. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Tanir Rural LLG in New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History On December 29, 1943 Boang Island was reconnoitered by Allied coastwatcher Harry Murray escorted by members of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and U.S. Navy (USN) as a site for a a potential Allied airfield, but none was ever developed at this location.
