Location Lat 9° 25' 0S Long 147° 5' 60E Gerehu located to the north of Port Moresby to the east is the Waigani Swamp. During World War II, this area was empty and developed into camp and dump areas. In the early 1970s, Gerehu was developed into a suburb and included the University of Papua New Guinea (University of PNG). Today, it has grown into a larger settlement area and is part of the National Capital District (NCD) in Papua New Guinea (PNG). University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) is located near Gerehu. During 1942-1943 the campus area was a camp area for U.S. Army Air Force units including the 5th Air Force, 90th Bombardment Group that includes concrete slabs for buildings. Bruce Hoy adds: "Behind Gerehu and between it and the University were the camp sites for the 90th Bomb Group. I visited the area once with a number of 90th Bomb Group veterans who guided me to the place. I have a picture of an interesting slab of concrete with 'WELCOME 1943' engraved in it in this area as well as concrete steps, slabs, etc." Wallaby Dump Located to the north of Port Moresby, to the west of the Waigani Swamp. During early 1942 until the end of the war, the U.S. Army built roads and an ordinance depot at this location nicknamed "Wallaby Dump". Units at Wallaby Dump included the 55th Ordnance Ammunition Company (thirty man detachment) and the 630th Ordnance Company. Today, the area is part of Gerehu. No trace of the dump remains, aside from the roads. Vehicle Dump Located near Gerehu. The U.S. Army abandoned many trucks, jeeps and vehicles at this location. Bruce Hoy adds: "There was one major camp area with plenty of abandoned and rusty jeep and truck bodies according to my slides. It was almost opposite the University, or Administrative College. Bitsubishi Hill Hill located to the northeast of Gerehu, bordering Waigani Swamp to the east and north of a sewage treatment plant. During 1942, a Japanese aircraft attacking Port Moresby crashed at this location. Afterwards, the hill was named "Bitsubishi Hill" as a play on the Japanese aircraft manufacturer "Mitsubishi". It is unclear which Japanese aircraft type or specific crash might be associated with this nickname. Mitsubishi was the manufacture of the A6M2 Zero, G3M Nell, G4M Betty or Ki-46 Dinah. All four types operated over Port Moresby during 1942. One possibility might be G3M2 Nell CPO1c Harada that exploded on a suicide mission and "crashed into the hills" on March 31, 1942. Justin Taylan adds: "During 2006, no trace of the aircraft could be found and no aircraft wreckage was know to locals in the area." B-24D "Yanks From Hell" 41-23755 Pilot Crawford crashed February 7, 1943 onto a hillside northwest of Gerehu Contribute
