Location Lat 8° 39' 0S Long 143° 31' 0E Kiwai Island is located at sea level on the southern coast of New Guinea at the mouth of the Fly River. Also know as "Iasa". Prewar and during the Pacific War, part of the Western District in the Territory of Papua. Today located in Western Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Jack Lane reports: "While setting up navigation base stations for oil exploration. We were pushing through the jungle and came across a small 'runway'. Also the wrecks of at least two aircraft, one in good condition in the middle 1960's. Low-wing military plane, single radial engine. Looking into the cockpit, there were two seats, don't remember seeing any markings. I was told that there was another plane, crashed in the jungle not far away, but hard to get to in the swampy jungle. We could only travel easily where they had bridging." Contribute
