Location Western Province (WP) is located on the southern coast of New Guinea. Also known as "Fly River Province" for the Fly River. Prewar and during the Pacific War, part of the Western District in the Territory of Papua. To the west was the border with Dutch New Guinea (DNG) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today Western Province is part of Papua New Guinea (PNG). To the east is Gulf Province. To the west is the international border with Indoneisa with Papua Province (Provinsi Papua). To the south is the international border with Australia and the Torres Straits and Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. Wartime History During World War II, although no combat occurred in this area, Allied aircraft overflew the area on the ferry route for from Australia to New Guinea. Also, some aircraft crashed in the area returning from combat missions or due to bad weather or other accidents. Western Province Locations Fly River third largest river in southern New Guinea Kiunga located near the international border with Indonesia and Papua Province. Arufi inland village near the near the Fly River. Kiwai (Iasa) located at the mouth of the Fly River. Morehead located at roughly the center of Western Province.
