Location The German Residence at Rabaul is located off the Namanula Road atop a ridge with panoramic views of Rabaul and Simpson Harbor. Also known as the German Residence at Rabaul or Governor's Residence in reference to the German Governor of German New Guinea Albert Hahl. Between 1884 until September 1914 part of Deutsch Neu Guinea (German New Guinea). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar During the German colonial era, a large wooden building was constructed at this location as Governor's Residence for the Governor of Deutsch Neu Guinea (German New Guinea), Dr. Albert Hahl who founded Rabaul in 1903 and served until the German administration surrender in September 1914. Wartime History During the Japanese occupation of Rabaul, used by the Japanese. Sometime between 1943-1944 the building was destroyed by Allied bombing. Today Postwar, nothing was built at this location. Today, traces of the German residence remain including stonewalls and steps. The area is accessible to the public with panoramic views of the area.
