Location
Onekotan Island is located in the Kurile Islands in Russia. To the north are Onekotan Strait (Onnekotan Strait) and Paramushir
Island. To the northwest is Makanrushi Island (Makanru). To the west is the Sea of Okhotsk and to the east is the North Pacific Ocean.
Also spelled Onnekotan Island. In the Ainu language Onekotan means "large village". In Japanese known as Onekotan-tō. Wartime American spelling Onnekotan. In Russian, Онекотан. Prewar and during World War II, part of Japan. Postwar, part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia.
Wartime History
During the Pacific War, a small Japanese garrison was based on Onekotan. Starting in March 1944, American aircraft bombed Onekotan concentrating primarily on shipping in the vicinity until the middle of March 1945. On August 25, 1945, the Japanese garrison surrendered to Soviet forces without resistance.
