Location Lat 8° 5' 60S Long 156° 50' 60E Ghizo Island is located to the west of New Georgia and Kolombangara. Named after an infamous local head-hunter. The largest settlement, Gizo (Gizo Government Station) is located on the eastern side of the island bordering Gizo Harbor. Nearby is Nusatupe Island (Nusa Tupe) and Nusatupe Airfield built postwar that serves Gizo and the surrounding area. Wartime History During March 1943, a contingent of 6th Kure Special Naval Landing Force (Kure SNLF) occupied Gizo without opposition. "Gizo Jima Kantei" (Gizo Island Quite Revolt) began on July 23, 1943 until October 10, 1943.
