Location Gizo is located on the eastern side of Ghizo Island bordering Gizo Harbor. To the east is Nusatupe Island (Nusa Tupe) and Nusatupe Airfield built postwar that serves Gizo and the surrounding area. Also known as "Gizo Town". Prewar Prewar, Gizo was a developed settlement with docks, wharves and the British District Officer for the Central Solomons. Also known as "Gizo Government Station". Wartime History During March 1943, a contingent of Kure 6th Special Naval Landing Force (SNLF) Reksentai (Marines) occupied Gizo without opposition. The "Gizo Jima Kantei" (Gizo Island Quite Revolt) spanned from July 23, 1943 until October 10, 1943. On August 2, 1943 the Gizo garrison claimed an enemy PT boat as sunk, after observing the sinking of PT-109. By October 10, 1943 the remaining Japanese were withdrawn from Gizo.
