Location Stima Lagoon borders northeastern Arundel Island in the New Georgia Island Group (New Georgia Islands) in the central Solomon Islands. To the northwest is the Stima peninsula. To the west and north is Kula Gulf. Beyond to the southeast is Hathorn Sound. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate (BSIP). Today part of Western Province in the Solomon Islands. Wartime History On September 1, 1943 the U.S. Army 172nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion entered Stima Lagoon to land on northeast Arundel Island. On September 5, 1943 they attack north of Stima Lagoon but encountered strong Japanese defensive positions and their advance was halted. By September 8, 1943 both sides landed reinforcements. On September 12, 1943 the Americans resumed the advance from the west. By September 14, 1943 the Japanese were compressed onto the Stima peninsula to the northwest from pressure by the 25th Infantry Division, 27th Infantry Regiment. On September 15, 1943 the Japanese counterattacked but failed to break the American lines. Afterwards, the Japanese were ordered to only fight delaying actions. On September 16, 1943 the Americans landed reinforcements including thirteen U.S. Marine Corps M3 Stuart tanks. During the night of September 19, 1943 into the early hours of September 20, 1943 General Sasaki ordered the remaining Japanese withdrew to Kolombangara Island.
