Location
Salat Island is located at the southeastern edge of the outer reef of Truk Lagoon in Chuuk State (Truk) in the Federated States of Micronesia. Also known as Sanat. Borders Salat Pass to the northeast and Neuri Pass, Uligar Pass and Udidan Pass to the south.
Wartime History
During Pacific War, there were two 4.7" guns mounted on
pedestals without shields in revetments with magazines supported by a 75cm searchlight. Nearby was a magazine, barracks and mess hall. Ten personnel from the Japanese Navy 43rd Naval Guard force defended the island. On the shoreline were 120 Naval land mines laid in three fields on the north, west and south sides of the island at 20m intervals spaces 6m apart. Later in the war, a controlled torpedo base was established on the north side of the island with two man controlled torpedoes operated by four Navy personnel.
