Lat 37° 46' 30N Long 122° 25' 10W  San Francisco is located on the the San Francisco Peninsula in San Francisco County in California in the United States of America (USA). Also known as San Fran or Frisco or abbreviated as SF. Borders San Francisco Bay to the east, San Pablo Bay to the north and the Gulf of Farallones to the west and beyond the Pacific Ocean. To the south is San Bruno to the south and to the northeast is Treasure Island.

Wartime History
During World War II, San Francisco was a major staging area for America ships, troops and supplies headed for the Pacific. At the end of the war, a gateway for veterans returning home.

Fort Mason
Established November 6, 1850 on the site of Battery San Jose by the Spanish government in 1797. WWII debarkation point for troops.

San Francisco Maritime National Park Association
Located at Jefferson Street and Hyde Street at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco includes the World War II submarine, USS Pampanito SS-383.

Hunters Point Naval Shipyard (San Francisco Naval Shipyard)
Located at Hunters Point on the east side of San Francisco. During 1940, purcashed by the U.S. Navy (USN) and in 1941 began operating as "San Francisco Naval Shipyard" until 1974 when deactivated and renamed Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.

Harbor defenses of the Golden Gate were manned by U.S. Army Coastal Artillery Units. The harbor defense system included underwater minefields, anti-aircraft positions, and a maritime shipping control system, in addition several coastal defense gun batteries.

Battery Chamberlain
6" guns on Baker Beach sited on the submarine minefields off the harbor entrance. During the 1940's Baker Beach was heavily fortified with several gun batteries and numerous fighting positions.
