Location Suisun Bay is is a shallow tidal estuary at the confluence of the Sacramento River and San Joaquin River between and Solano County to the north and Contra Costa County to the south in central California in the United States of America (USA). To the south is Port Chicago. To the west connects to San Pablo Bay and beyond San Francisco Bay. Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet During 1946, the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet was established in the northwest portion of Suisun Bay. Used by the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) where ships are laid up in long term storage "mothball" for use in the event of a national emergency. At the peak in 1950, more than 2,000 ships were laid up at this location. In January 2016, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and MARAD have officially announced the Suisun site closure in February 2017, any remaining ships will be sold at auction or sold for scrap. Today, the only other reserve fleets locations in the United States are the James River Reserve Fleet in Virginia and the Beaumont Reserve Fleet in Texas. List of vessels in the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet: SS Oliver Kelley arrives October 13, 1945 departs May 4, 1955 for grain program and moves to Olympia. SS Jeremiah O'Brien arrives February 8, 1946 departs May 21, 1980 for use as a museum ship. SS George H. Himes arrives March 8, 1947 removed March 27, 1947. USS Venus (AK-135) SS William Williams arrives February 27, 1948 removed April 18, 1961. SS Lane Victory arrives May 11, 1948 leaves during the Korean War departs Oct 18, 1988. USS Celeno (AK-76) SS Redfield Proctor arrives March 1, 1946 removed March 1, 1961. USS Iowa (BB-61) arrives April 21, 2001 departs November 2011. Contribute
