Ship History Built by Permanente Metals Corporation in in Richmond, California. Ordered by the U.S. Maritime Commission (MC). Laid down May 19, 1943 as a Maritime Commission Emergency Cargo Ship (EC2-S-C1) Liberty Ship with MC hull number 2725. Laid down December 14, 1943. Launched January 4, 1944 as SS Oliver Kelley named for American Oliver H. Kelley (1826–1913). Completed January 11, 1944 and operated by McCormick SS Co. under a GAA contract for the U.S. government. Wartime History During February 1945 departs the United States loaded with a cargo of explosives, vehicles and machinery bound for Lingayen Gulf on Luzon in the Philippines. On March 17, 1945 at 10:30am while transiting the Surigao Strait as part of a convoy, hit by a dud torpedo on the port side at the waterline that caused a severe jar causing slight damage. The crew believed they were either hit by a dud torpedo or collision with a submarine. In fact, the ship was hit by a dud torpedo fired by HA-79 Type C midget submarine that reported reports attacking two large transports at an unreported location. Postwar At the end of the Pacific War, her last voyage ends in San Francisco. On October 13, 1945 laid up in Suisun Bay as part of the Reserve Fleet. A. On May 4, 1955 withdrawn operated by Olympic Steamship Co. Inc. under a GAA contract as part of the U.S. Grain Program and loaded with grain. On May 28, 1955 returned to the reserve fleet in Olympia, WA loaded with grain. On November 27, 1957 participates in the rain program. On December 1, 1957 returns empty to the reserve fleet in Olympia, WA. Fate On June 19, 1959 offered for sale as a scrap hull. with a base bid of $70,000. On July 31, 1959 sold to Luria Brothers & Co. for $72,009 for scrap metal. Afterwards, broken up for scrap.
