Sub History
Built by 'P' Naval Armory (Ōurasaki) as as a Type C Kō-hyōteki hei-gata midget submarine. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as HA-79 under the command of Lt Hiroshi Ichikawa.

Wartime History
During September 1944 with HA-78 arrives Zamboanga on Mindanao to form a two midget submarine unit under the command of Lt(jg) Ichikawa.

During late November 1944 with HA-78 departs Zamboanga for Cebu Harbor then to conduct conduct operations in Ormoc Bay off Leyte but are ineffective due to the distance and travel time. Afterwards, returns to Zamboanga.

On January 21, 1945 departs Zamboanga and returns to Cebu Harbor.

On March 17, 1945 reports attacking two large transports at an unreported location. In fact, fired a torpedo that hit SS Oliver Kelley in the Surigao Strait but was a dud and failed to explode and caused only slight damage.

On March 20, 1945 claims to sink a large transport. No Allied loss can be correlated to this claim.

Fate
On March 26, 1945 after the American landing on Cebu Island, the four midget submarines in Cebu Harbor are scuttled to prevent capture: HA-69, HA-78, HA-79 and HA-81 over the next several days. On March 27, 1945 three PV-1s spot one of the midget sub with a float attached and make a rocket and strafing attack.

Fate of the Crew
After scuttling their midget submarines, the crews join the Japanese forces defending Cebu. Their ultimate fates are unknown, likely all were killed or missing.
