| Location Malakula Island is located in Malampa Province in the center of Vanuatu (Republic of Vanuatu, New Hebrides). Also spelled Malekula. The provincial capital is Lakatoro on Malakula Island. Prewar In late 1916 during World War I, the local population became threatening to the French administration where it was claimed cannibalism was still practiced. In response, the French requested a punitive expedition and show of force to suppress the local population. At the end of October 1916, HMAS Una and French Navy Kersaint arrived at Vila and proceeded to Malakula Island landing troops on November 3, 1916 that engaged in fighting. Despite heavy casualties to the expedition, they reestablished colonial control. Lakatoro Lat (DMS) 16° 7' 0S Long (DMS) 167° 25' 0E Lakatoro is located on the northeast coast of Malakula Island.
