Wartime History
Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 2 Mark 1 Model 2 Radar mounted on a trailer. This radar set had an aerial search range between 31-93 miles / 50-150km.

During 1942 or 1943 transported to Cape Saint George on New Ireland. This radar was emplaced on a concrete base on a hilltop as part of early warning system for aircraft approaching from the south over the Solomon Sea or southeast from Bougainville and the northern Solomon Islands.

By late 1943, the Allies had detected this radar. On at least four specific missions, this radar site was targeted by Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) and U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers and fighters between late December 1943 until early March 1944. It is unclear if any of these attacks damaged or disabled the radar, or if the Allies were aware of the precise location.

On December 23, 1943 (RNZAF) six PV-1 Venturas attack radar station at Cape Saint George.

On January 9, 1944 (USAAF) 13th Air Force P-70 Havoc strafes the radar station at Cape Saint George.

On February 27, 1944 (USAAF) Three 13th Air Force P-38 Lightnings strafe radar station Cape Saint George.

On March 3, 1944 (USAAF) Five 13th Air Force P-Lightnings bomb radar installation Cape Saint George.

In early September 1945 after the official surrender of Japan, if this radar survived until the end of the Pacific War, it was likely disabled by Japanese personnel. Alternately, it might have been demolished by Allied personnel or Japanese Prisoners Of War (POWs) laboring for the Allies during the postwar demilitarization and cleanup efforts.

Wreckage
Today, this radar remains in situ atop the broken concrete base with the radar and trailer knocked forward. The screen is twisted and broken.
