American Headhunter


This memoir by Kenneth Bancroft Lloyd Jr., son of Kenneth Bancroft Lloyd, O-758018 who enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF), 5th Air Force (5th AF), 8th Fighter Group (8th FG), 80th Fighter Squadron (80th FS) "Headhunters" as a P-38 Lightning pilot who served in the South West Pacific Area during World War II. On August 17, 1944 he claimed an aerial victory, his only victory and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and Air Medal.

The book's title American Headhunter is a reference to the squadron's nickname "Headhunters" and is written in a screenplay style of recollections of Kenneth "Kenny" B. Lloyd as told by his son. The book includes Lloyd's recollections of his combat missions and events including meeting Charles A. Lindbergh. On December 26, 1944 the squadron flew a night mission against Japanese warships off Mindoro Lloyd's plane was damaged he bailed out and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). The book mentions other pilots and personalities in the squadron including Major Jay T. Robbins.

Lloyd died on June 19, 2006 and is buried at Riverside National Cemetery. The book ends on pages 94-99 with montages of wartime photographs from Lloyd's personal photo album and the citation for his Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) earned on December 26, 1944. Also, a photograph of his flight jacket Headhunters patch and grave.

The first edition is spiral bound with the squadron's Headhunter insignia released in 2018. The second edition has a different cover artwork paperback released November 25, 2019.
