The Final Countdown
"...This Is The U.S.S. Nimtz... Where The Hell Are We?..."

This movie begins in 1980 aboard aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) when it departs Pearl Habor and mysteriously goes back in time before the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941 and decides if it should intervene in historical events. The film stars Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen ans Katharine Ross. This Hollywood movie was released in the United States on August 1, 1980. That same month, a novelization based on the movie was released with the same title The Final Countdown by Martin Caidin.

Over a five week period in 1979, the movie was filmed aboard USS Nimitz (CVN-68) with cooperation from the U.S. Navy (USN) and Department of Defense (DoD) with shooting at NAS Key West and Norfolk including footage of F-14 Tomcats from VF-84 "Jolly Rogers". In the film, Navy personnel were used as actors with nearly fifty credited. The aerial dogfight sequence includes replica A6M2 Zeros (AT-6 conversions) piloted by Confederate Air Force (CAF) pilots, the same planes used in Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970). The Pearl Harbor attack sequences are black and white versions of sequences from the same film. Today available in Blu-Ray, DVD and VHS formats and streaming.
