The Thin Red Line
(1962 Novel)

Author James Jones was a soldier with the U.S. Army 25th Infantry Division, 27th Regiment and participated in the battle at Galloping Horse and Hill 53 during January 1943 near Mount Austen on Guadalcanal.

The novel begins with the U.S. Army assaulting the remaining Japanese positions on Guadalcanal but uses fictional location names. Galloping Horse is fictionalized as "The Dancing Elephant". Originally published in 1962, this novel is considered a classic of war literature and was adapted into two Hollywood movies: Thin Red Line (1964) and Thin Red Line (1998).
