Ship History Built by X. Laid down X as Kamikaze-class destroyer. Lauched X as Matsukaze. Commissioned X in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Wartime History PARTIAL HISTORY On July 12, 1943 at 5:30pm departs Rabaul with Jintsū with destroyers Mikazuki, Yukikaze, Hamakaze, Kiyonami and Yūgure plus destroyer transports Satsuki, Minazuki, Yūnagi, and Matsukaze each with personnel and cargo bound for Vila on Kolombangara where the destroyer transports will unload. PARTIAL HISTORY On October 6, 1943 during the night, part of a destroyer force sent to rescue the remaining Japanese from Horaniu on Vella Lavella Island. The force includes three destroyer-transports: Fumizuki, Matsukaze, and Yūnagi escorted by six destroyers: Akigumo, Isokaze, Kazagumo, Yūgumo, Shigure and Samidare. At 11:30pm, the Japanese force spotted three U.S. Navy (USN) destroyers: USS Selfridge (DD-357), USS Chevalier (DD-451) and USS O'Bannon (DD-450) approaching from Vella Gulf. During the Naval Battle of Vella Lavella, Yūgumo was hit and sunk. USS Chevalier (DD-451) was hit by a torpedo and abandoned and later scuttled. The other two destroyers USS O'Bannon (DD-450) and USS Selfridge (DD-357) both sustained damaged. The battle was considered a Japanese victory as they sustained less damage and were able to complete their evacuation mission. PARTIAL HISTORY On January 14, 1944 at Rabaul targeted by SBD Dauntless dive bombers and TBF Avengers and sustained light damage. PARTIAL HISTORY On On February 17, 1944 during "Operation Hailstone" in Truk Lagoon aided damaged Fumitsuki with Hakachi. Sinking History On June 9, 1944 sunk by a torpedo fired by USS Swordfish (SS-193) roughly 70 miles southeast of Chi Chi Jima (Chichi Jima). Contribute
