Location Vella Gulf is located between Vella Lavella Island to the west, Kolombanga Island to the southeast, Ghizo Island and Wilson Strait to the south and Choiseul Island (Lauru) to the north. Wartime History Following the Battle of Kolombangara on July 12-13, 1943, the Japanese Navy used Vella Gulf and Blackett Strait and the more constricted passage at Wana Wana Island. During the night of August 6-7, 1943 the Battle of Vella Gulf occured in Vella Gulf. During the night of October 6, 1943 a Japanese destroyer force sucessfully evacuated Japanese personell from Vella Lavella Island while the escorting destroyed participated in the Naval Battle of Vella Lavella.
