Ship History Built by Kure Naval Arsenal in Kure. Laid down February 27, 1945 as No. 1 class landing ship (fast transport) designated Ship No. 2921. Launched April 25, 1945 as Transport No. 21 (T.21). Completed and commissioned July 15, 1945 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) under the command of LtCdr Zensuke Shinohara attached to the Kure Naval District. Assigned to the 31st Naval Transportation Unit, Combined Fleet. Wartime History On August 9, 1945 departs Kure Harbor bound for Tanabe Harbor to load kaiten manned torpedoes. Around 11:00am while transiting the Seto Inland Sea (Inland Sea) in the Kutsuna Islands spotted by P-47N Thunderbolts from 19th Fighter Squadron (19th FS) and is repeatedly strafed causing damage and results in 60 killed and 100 wounded then was run aground on Tsuwajijima (Tsuwa Jima) to prevent it from sinking. The survivors were rescued and aided by civilians on the island. Sinking History On August 10, 1945 in the early morning hours, the damaged ship capsized and sinks in shallow water off Tsuwajijima (Tsuwa Jima) at roughly Lat 33°59'N, Long 132°31'E. Officially removed from the Navy list September 15, 1945. Wreckage During 1948, the shipwreck was raised from Tsuwajijima (Tsuwa Jima) and towed to a dry dock where it was broken up for scrap.
