Wartime History During 1943, this vessel was damaged and deliberately run aground with the bow facing the southeast tip of Nago Island in the southern portion of Kavieng Harbor. Beyond to the northeast is Kavieng. Shipwreck By late December 1943, this vessel was partially submerged with the bow facing shore and the stern partially above the surface and the midship sunk below the waterline and bow above the waterline. Several kingposts were intact on the deck. Afterwards, this shipwreck was photographed by Allied aircraft attacking Kavieng at low level. Sometime in the immediate postwar period, the parts of the shipwreck above the surface was demolished by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) to clear Kavieng Harbor. Today, nothing is visible above the surface. Rod Pearce adds: "The superstructure and portions above water were blown off and cut up after the war by the RAN for safe navigation to the inner harbor. Undoubtedly it is the wreck in question, it also looks a little different from the picture." Justin Taylan adds: "This ship appears to be a large cargo vessel probably 5,000+ Tons with several kingposts and a center bridge. Although nothing is above the surface today, A large dark shadow is visible in the same location in present day satellite imagery." Contribute
