Ship History Built by Kawasaki Shipbuilding. Laid down October 21, 1936. Launched February 16, 1937 as Kiyokawa Maru. PARTIAL HISTORY On March 5, 1942 departed Rabaul along with Tenryu, Tatsuta, Yabari with six destroyers as part of Operation “SR” for the invasions of Lae and Salamaua. On March 8, 1942, Kiyokawa Maru floatplanes provided air cover for the Japanese landings at Lae and Salamaua. On March 10, 1942 while Kiyokawa Maru was operating 25 miles east of Lae, damaged by one or more bombs dropped by TBD Devastators from USS Yorktown CV-5. The next day she reaches Rabaul and transferred her floatplanes to the Kamikawa Maru and undergoes temporary repairs then departs March 18, 1942 bound for Japan. On April 8, 1942 arrives at Yokosuka and placed into dry dock five days later for further repairs. Afterwards, received a new complement of seaplanes including six F1M2 Pete, two E8N2 Dave and four E13A Jakes. PARTIAL HISTORY On October 11, 1942 damaged by a hit to the engine room north of Buka Island and returns to Rabaul. On October 14, 1943 repairs are begun by Hakkai Maru. PARTIAL HISTORY Postwar On December 9, 1948 refloated and later repaired. During April 1950 resumed passenger service departing Kobe to Bangkok. Next, Kobe to New York, then South American routes.
