Ship History
Built by William Gray & Co. Ltd. during 1922. Laid down as a cargo vessel. Launched Julu 1922 as MV Modjokerto named for Modjokerto in eastern Java. On July 20, 1922 delivered to Rotterdamsche Lloyd (Koninklijke, KRL, Ruys Willem & Co.) in Rotterdam and used as a cargo vessel.

Rebuilt during 1933 at NV Dok & Werf Maatschappij Wilton Fijenoord Rotterdam and was lengthened and equipped with a maier bow and converted into a motor vessel. Completed by July 1934. During 1942, under the command of J. Verhagen.

Wartime History
On February 4, 1942 arrives Tjilatjap on southern Java at an emergency supply base with only limited facilities where she unloaded her cargo slowly over the next three weeks. On February 27, 1942 in the evening departs Tjilatjap with 22 other ships to evacuate Java.

Sinking History
On March 1, 1942 in the Indian Ocean around 10:00am her radio operator sent a distress call stating the ship was being pursued by aircraft roughly 330 miles south-southwest of Tjilatjap. At 10:40am the ship was spotted by a floatplane from Tone. Next, reported the ship was being chased by a warship. At 11:25 engaged by gunfire from heavy cruiser Chikuma and destroyer Yugure and was badly damaged and sunk at roughly Lat 12°40′S Long 106°40′E. Her final radio message included the word sinking. During the engagement and sinking, 42 of the crew were lost.

Fates of the Crew
Twenty-five surviving crew members were captured and became Prisoners Of War (POW). On March 11, 1942 disembarked at Staring Bay on Celebes (Sulawesi) and turned over to the Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces (SNLF) at Kendari. On March 24, 1942 at Kendari Airfield group of three dozen Allied POWs were executed by the Japanese and their bodies thrown in mass graves.

Recovery of Remains
During 1946, American Graves Registration Service (AGRS) recovered the remains and recovered five from USS Edsall and 25 from MV Modjokerto.

Memorials
Sixteen of those recovered were buried at Jakarta (Ancol) Netherlands Field of Honour at graves 168/169, no. 173/174 and no. 179/180. Ten were buried at Kembang Kuning Field of Honour (Nederlands Ereveld Kembang Kuning) in row DDD graves 95/96 and 99/100.

References
Some sources incorrectly state MV Modjokerto was sunk by Japanese submarine I-58 or I-54. Neither submarine was built yet.
