Location
Lat 4° 4' 54S 122° 25' 6E  Kendari Airfield is located at an elevation of 538' above sea level to the southwest of Kendari on the southeastern of Celebes Island (Sulawesi). Also known as Kendari II. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today known in Southeast Sulawesi Province in Indonesia. Known as Kendari Airport and renamed Wolter Monginsidi Airport. During 2010 renamed Haluoleo Airport.

Construction
Built by the Dutch prior to the war.

Wartime History
On January 1, 1942 the first American aircraft to land at Kendari Airfield was B-17D Flying Fortress 40-3061 piloted by Captain Edwin B. Broadhurts who inspects the runway and facilities and reports the airfield had enough fuel and bombs to support U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) bomber operations. Afterwards, used by B-17's as a forward staging base until the middle of January 1942 when withdrawn.

By early February 1942, occupied by the Japanese and immediately repaired and put into use by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as a base for fighters and bombers during the Java campaign and for the remainder of the Pacific War.

Attacked by Allied aircraft in late January 1942 until the end of the Pacific War. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.

Today
Still in use today as Haluoleo Airport. Also known as Kendari Airport. Previously known as Wolter Monginsidi Airport named for Indonesian hero Wolter Monginsidi executed by the Dutch on September 5, 1949. On February 13, 2010 renamed Haluoleo Airport in honor of  Sultan Halu Oleo. On April 6, 2012 a new terminal was opened. The single runway is oriented 26/08 and measures 6,890' x 98' surfaced with asphalt. Airport codes: ICAO: WAWW IATA: KDI.
