Location Lever Harbor PT Boat Base was located on northeast New Georgia in the Solomon Islands. Also known as simply Lever Harbor. Wartime History On July 24, 1943 Lt. Craig C. Smith arrived with four PT Boats from Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Six (PTRon 6) and APC 28 to serve as a tender. This location was to serve as a forward operating base with no shore facilities. On July 26, 1943 the new base at Lever Harbor was placed under the command of Lieutenant Commander Kelly with missions starting from this location in late July 1943. On August 3, 1943 the first PT Boats from Lever Harbor engaged in combat when they encountered Japanese barge. From this location, PT Boats patrolled the eastern side of Kolombangara Island. On August 15, 1943 PT overnight, PT-157 and PT-154 escorting APC 25, LCT 325 and LCT 327 depart Lever Harbor bound for Enogai Inlet. During the voyage, twice Japanese planes appeared overhead to bomb and strafe and the pair of PT Boats created a diversion by zigzagging at high speed and laying smoke to lead the enemy away from the convoy. During the attacks, the only casualties were two wounded by shell fragments aboard LCT-325. By early October 1943 when resistance ended on Vella Lavella and the Japanese evacuated Kolombangara, this base was no longer useful for patrols and rolled up and abandoned.
