After the U.S. landing at Rendova on June 30, 1943 the U.S. Navy (USN) established at PT-Boat base at this location with shore facilities on Lumbaria Island with PT Boats docked inside Rendova Harbor.

Wartime History
Starting in early July 1943, Rendova PT Boat Base was used by the U.S. Navy (USN) as their primary and most forward PT-Boat base in the central Solomon Islands to support the New Georgia campaign. The base was under the command of USN Commander T. G. Warfield. Also known as Lumbaria Island PT-Boat Base.

At this location was based Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 9 (MTBS-9) and Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 10 (MTBS-10). PT-Boats that operated from this location included PT-103, PT-104, PT-105, PT-107, PT-109, PT-117, PT-154, PT-155, PT-156, PT-157, PT-158, PT-159, PT-160, PT-161, PT-162 and PT-164 and PT-174.

In early July 1943 renamed "Todd City" in honor of Ensign Leon E. Todd, Jr., USNR, O-161871 from New Jersey who was the first PT-Boat crewman from this base Killed In Action (KIA) on July 2, 1943 and buried at sea.

On August 1, 1943 a Japanese air raid destroyed to PT-Boats that were docked including PT-164 and PT-117. That same afternoon, PT-109 departed from this base when it was lost during a collision in the Blacket Strait.

During October 1943, the U.S. Navy (USN) developed Rendova PT Boat Base (Bau Island) on nearby Bau Island.

Ewan Stevenson adds:
"I went there on a picnic in 1994 very pleasant and searched for a PT boat sunk in the harbour (deep) that is rarely seen/known. Had no success this time either!"
