Ship History Built by Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA. Laid down December 20, 1937. Launched December 8, 1938. Commissioned September 15, 1939 as USS Mustin in honor of Captain Henry C. Mustin. Wartime History At the start of the Pacific War, undergoing an overhaul at at Boston Navy Yard. On December 8, 1941 departed Boston escorting USS Idaho (BB-42) and USS Mississippi (BB-41) then proceeded to Charleston Navy Yard to complete the overhaul until January 3, 1942. On January 20, 1943 transits the Panama Canal and arrives at Pearl Harbor on February 17, 1942. Afterwards, escorted convoys between Hawaii and San Francisco. In early April 1942 Mustin joined a convoy to Samoa then returned to Pearl Harbor on May 24, 1942. Afterwards, escorted a convoy to Midway then returned to Pearl Harbor on June 5, 1942 and joined Task Force 17 (TF-17) to search for any Japanese warships that survived the Battle of Midway without results. PARTIAL HISTORY Used during "Operation Crossroads". Decommissioned on August 29, 1946 and use as a target at Bikini Atoll. Sinking History On April 18, 1948 scuttled by gunfire off Kwajalein.
