"3/6/45 U.S. Supplies brought ashore on Iwo Jima
U.S. troops relay supplies ashore from the gaping jaws of American landing craft to the beach at Iwo Jima, in the Volcano group, 750 miles (1,200 km) from Tokyo, capital of Japan. Six days after U.S. Marines landed on Iwo on Feb. 18, 1945, the steady stream of equipment helped them to seize an airfield on the southern sector of the island and to start American air operations from the site. As road conditions improved, the Marines drove north from captured Mount Suribachi, taking a second airfield on the island's central plateau and Montayama, Iwo's administrative center.
