USN October 16, 1945
Sub History
Built by Sasebo Naval Yard at Sasebo. Laid down October 2, 1943 as I-400-class submarine Sentoku Type. During construction, the water tight hangar for three Aichi M6A1 Serian seaplanes was converted to transport aviation fuel due to the desperate need to transport aviation fuel from the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) to Japan. Launched September 5, 1944. Assigned to Commander Otoji Nakamura as chief equipping officer. Completed July 24, 1945 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as I-402 attached to the Sixth Fleet, SubDiv 1 with I-13, I-14, I-400 and I-401. Assigned to Commanding Officer (CO). Commander Otoji Nakamura.

Wartime History
On August 11, 1945 while moored in Kure Harbor around 10:40am targeted by P-51D Mustangs that dropped bombs that scored several near misses that resulted in several holes in the fuel tanks and wound two of the crew. On September 2, 1945 after the official surrender of Japan I-402 was surrendered at Kure and decommissioned.

Postwar
During October 1945 a crew of U.S. Navy (USN) sailors take the submarine from Kure to Sasebo.

Sinking History
On April 1, 1946 during "Operation Road's End" I-402 and HA-201 are towed to the Goto Islands and used for target practice by USS Everett F. Larson DD-830 and other warships. Afterwards, scuttled 16 nautical miles off Kinai Island in 100 fathoms at roughly Lat 32°  37N, 129°  17E.

Shipwreck
During August 2015, the wreckage of I-402 was located underwater by the Japanese Maritime Safety Agency.
