Sub History Built by Kure Navy Yard, Kure in Hiroshima. Laid down May 15, 1942 as a the second Type C3 submarine designated Submarine No. 626. On November 1, 1942 renumbered I-53. Launched December 24, 1942 as I-53. On February 15, 1944 assigned to LtCdr Seihachi Toyomasu as chief equipping officer. Completed and commissioned February 20, 1944 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) attached to the Kure Naval District. Equipped with Type 13 air-search radar and Type 22 surface-search radar. Assigned to the 6th Fleet, Submarine Squadron 11 for training. Wartime History On March 29, 1944 departs Tokuyama and fuels at 3rd Fuel Depot and proceeds to the Inland Sea and begins training for Operation Tatsumaki (Tornado) with I-36, I-38, I-41 and I-44 for a kaiten attack on Majuro until canceled. On May 17, 1944 departs Saeki on her first war patrol to bound for a patrol area to the northeast of Kavieng. Two days later, assigned to SubDiv 15, Sixth Fleet. On June 28, 1944 aborts the patrol after a lead is discovered in the fuel tanks. On July 2, 1944 arrives Truk for repairs. On July 15, 1944 departs Truk with Rear Admiral Noboru Owada embarked bound for Kure arriving ten days later. On July 28. 1944 arrives Sasebo and enters dry dock for repairs and anti-radar coating is reapplied. Afterwards, moves to Kure and converted to transport kaiten torpedoes and the aft 14cm deck gun is removed during the conversion. PARTIAL HISTORY Fate On April 1, 1946 towed by USS Nereus (AS-17) from Sasebo to an area off Goto Retto and scuttled by gunfire at 32-37N, 129-17E. Wreck On September 7, 2017 the wreck was found by Society La Plongée for Deep Sea Technology research team led by Research Professor Ura Tamaki from Kyushu Institute of Technology using a multibeam echosounder and documented by ROV.
