Tank History Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as a Type 97 Te Ke Tankette hull number unknown. Transported to Rabaul. Likely assigned to the 8th Tank Regiment. Wartime History This tank was one of forty Japanese tanks that survived the Pacific War in the Rabaul area. During September 1945 surrendered to the Australian Army at Rapopo. Wreckage This tank was abandoned in the vicinity of Vazin Plantation. Display During the 1970s, this tank was recovered and displayed outside the Anti-Aircraft and Search Light Command Bunker (aka Yamamoto Bunker or The Admiral's Bunker). During the 1994 eruption, this tank was moved to Kokopo Museum and displayed outdoors in the front yard. Brian Bennett recalls: "Tank used to be in another part of Rabaul but forget where now. I do remember that the track gear on side to bunker (right side) was in fairly bad shape even back in 1979. I recall trying to get Rabaul tourist association at the time to do something about getting the track gear fixed up and corrosion retarded." Contribute
