IJN![]() AWM Sept 16, 1945 ![]() Peter Flahavin 1996 |
Wartime History Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as a Type 97 Te Ke Tankette serial number unknown. One of four tanks transported to Nauru Island. All four tanks survived undamaged until the end of the Pacific War. On September 13, 1945 these tanks were officially surrendered to the Allies and parked near oil storage tanks under canvas covers. On September 16, 1945 all four tanks were inspected by the Australian Army, 31/51st Infantry Battalion under a canvas cover near oil storage tanks. Afterwards, these tankettes were disabled as part of Australian efforts to neutralize the island's defenses. Wreckage Pieces of at least one tankette was abandoned in a dump area at the pinnacles on Nauru Island. During the middle 1990s, Stan Gajda recovered pieces of wreckage including the panel over the engine compartment and the rear panel plus a tread. These parts were shipped via air freight to Ponape Island for use in the restoration of Type 97 Te Ke (Ponape/Adams). Stan Gajda adds: "Seen are the top panel over the engine compartment and the rear panel. These are for the Type 97 tankette and were used in the tankette restoration here and are still part of it. Not shown was one complete track set for the Type 97. All the parts were air freighted to Pohnpei on two pallets which cost me $1,000!" References Thanks to Stan Gajda for additional information Contribute
