Background
The 41st Infantry Division (41st ID) "The Jungleers" of U.S. Army National Guard was composed of units from the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and served in World War I and World War II.
162nd Infantry Regiment (162nd IR)
The 162nd Infantry Regiment (162nd IR). On March 15, 1943 the 1st Battalion "MacKechnie Force" under the command of Col Archibald R. MacKechnie (C.O. 162d Inf) occupies positions at the mouth of the Mambare River without opposition. On March 31, 1943 they depart for a landing further north at the mouth of the Waria River to occupy Dona. During late June 1943, the 3rd Battalion under the command of Roosevelt relieved MacKechnie Force and defended the Morobe area.
On September 25, 1943 the 162nd Infantry Regiment, having successfully completed its mission departs for Australia.
163rd Infantry Regiment (163rd IR)
The 163rd Regimental Combat Team (163rd RCT) / 163rd Regimental Combat Team (163rd RCT).
On April 22, 1944 Operation Persecution the 163rd lands at Blue Beach at Tadji on the north coast of New Guinea and captures Tadji Airfield.
On May 15, 1944 "Operation Straight Line" amphibious landing at Wakde by 163rd Regimental Combat Team (163rd RCT) with the 3rd Engineer Special Brigade, 593rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment (593rd EBSR). After three days of bitter fighting and moping up, the island was declared secured on May 18, 1944. The battle resulted in 40 KIA and 107 WIA Americans. Nearly the entire Japanese force died including 759 KIA. Four Japanese POWs were captured.
