Background
The 10th Air Force (10th AF) was part of the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) in China-Burma-India (CBI). On February 23, 1942 General Lewis H. Brereton arrived in India to take command of the command of the 10th Air Force (10th AF). On July 4, 1942 the American Volunteer Group (AVG) is inducted into the 10th Air Force as its contract with China terminates. Only 5 pilots and a few ground personnel of the AVG choose to join the USAAF, although 20 other pilots agree to stay until replacements arrive in Kunming.
