Background
On April 22, 1942 the 40th Reconnaissance Squadron (40th RS) was redesignated as the 435th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) assigned to the 19th Bombardment Group (19th BG) in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). Nicknamed "Kangaroo Squadron".

Wartime History
On July 16, 1942 lost is B-17E 41-2421 pilot Major Clarence E. "Sandy" McPherson crashed while landing at Horn Island Airfield.

On August 14, 1942 lost is B-17E "Chief Seattle" 41-2656 pilot 1st Lt. Wilson L. Cook on a solo reconnaissance mission bound for New Britain and New Ireland. Over the Solomon Sea, intercepted and claimed by A6M3 Model 32 Zeros from the Tainan Kōkūtai (Tainan Air Group).

On September 24, 1942 lost is B-17E 41-9206  pilot 1st Lt George F. Newton, Jr. on a reconnaissance mission over Faisi Island and Rabaul. Returning, this B-17 got lost in bad weather and ditched in shallow water in Orangerie Bay after twelve hours and ten minutes airborne.

On December 30, 1942 without personnel and equipment reestablished at Pocatello, Idaho and re-equipped with B-17s and becomes a replacement training unit.

On April 1, 1944 inactivated and the same day reactivated as 435th Bombardment Squadron (Very Heavy). On May 10, 1944 inactivated. On July 7, 1944 reactivated.

Postwar
On May 28, 1946 inactivated.
